FROM A COLLABORATIVE DESIGNING OF STORYTELLING TO A ROBOTIC AND VIRTUAL WORLD REPRESENTATION

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2012
abstract:
This paper presents an experiential learning lab focused on building a digital storytelling programming first robots with LEGO Mindstorms and after virtual worlds with Kodu Game Lab. The experiential laboratory (32 hours) has involved 33 children of secondary schools in collaborative learning arrangement in formal (school labs) and informal learning setting (cultural association children's museum). Starting from a collaborative design of the story, children have built a cardboard environment where robots have been programmed for moving, interacting and taking actions inside it. In second step children are invited to image a digital storytelling environment designing a virtual world capable to overcome the limits imposed by the previous environment. The laboratory highlights as the combined application of the robots building and the programming of virtual worlds help students to work in groups, to reflect for deep learning and to acquire the fundamentals of LEGO and KODU programming.
