abstract:
This volume explores the topics covered in the previous book The protection of ship hulls. Looking Back: from the bitumen to the existing paints, V. Romairone (ed. G. Ghiglione), ISMAR - CNR, 2006; result of extensive research, data collection and interpretation of scientific information collected at the time by ICMM (Institute of Marine Corrosion of Metals), CNR, as well as an historical survey of hull protection remedies and techniques used by the ancient maritime civilizations of the Mediterranean.
This renewed study shows, in particular, the problems inflicted by marine organisms when settled on the boat hull and as always, through the centuries, have been studied systems for defense of naval bottom. In more recent times, with the adoption of iron in shipbuilding, defense against the fouling in addition to the sea water corrosion on the metal hulls, have had to study protection systems. The use of antifouling and anticorrosive paints was the best solution. In addition, the book explores the biological aspects of the main fouling organisms. On the recent specific paint, some considerations are made in reference to the potential problems of environmental impact that have not yet been completely solved. Further extensions concern the transcript of some excerpts from ancient texts, they document how the builders faced and developed "technical practices" and specific studies to solve the problem of marine fouling, particularly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
