Abstract:
The effect of low intensity radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on neural cells has been studied. Olfactory Ensheathing Cell (OEC) cultures, typical glia cells showing characteristics of stem cells, have been exposed to 900 MHz continuous and amplitude modulated EMFs for 10, 15 and 20 mins at 37 ? C. The EMFs have been able to induce significant decrease in cellular viability and changes in analyzed marker expressions respect to control cell cultures. Surprisingly these effects were dependent on the presence or absence of amplitude modulation. We hypothesized that the involved mechanism might be related to the increase of intracellular calcium ions levels.
