Device-free indoor localization for AAL applications

Chapter
Publication Date:
2013
abstract:
A device-free localization method mainly devoted to Ambi- ent Assisted Living applications is here presented. The system exploits the Received Signal Strength (RSS) coming from fixed devices, whose position is a priori known, to localize a person in the coverage area. In particular, we propose a device-free localization system that minimize the number of fixed devices in order to achieve the accuracy required. This system exploits the variance of the measured RSS induced by the user movements to sense in which area the user is. The main benefit of this technique is from the point of view of the user acceptance, since the users don't need mobile device to carry on. Moreover, a priori evaluation of the accuracy performance, modulated in accordance with the needs of the AAL applications, can be obtained. The proposed system is then validated by an indoor experimental study that analyzes the achieved performance.
