Abstract:
A germplasm collection of single-flowered vetch (Vicia articulata Hornem.), a neglected crop native of the Mediterranean region, has been characterised to analyse its phenotypic and genetic variability. The methodology used has considered the analysis of botanical and agronomic descriptors, and molecular (RAPD) markers. The accessions from Europe have showed a wider phenotypic diversity for almost all descriptors used than other origins. A very low level of polymorphism was observed using RAPD markers. Nevertheless the broad variation observed suggests the possibility for breeders to improve and to propose this neglected crop as an alternative in some barren areas.
