Buen gobierno, orden y moralidad en las ciudades bajomedievales sardas a través de los libros de Ordinacions

Articolo
Data di Pubblicazione:
2010
Abstract:
This study analyses the world of good governance and morality in Sardinia in the late Middle Ages from the Book of Ordinacions, using as main documents of analysis the Ordinacions of the city of Cagliari and Alghero (1526). The Ordinacions provide information on the main elements that must be preserved by the city government, as well as the main crimes that need to be prohibited and punished. In this way, those who swear and blaspheme, no matter which nationality or status they have, receive a harsh punishment. Also gambling, avarice, false swearing, infidelity and incest, will be pursued; these crimes will be punishable according to social background, religion or ethnics. The Ordinacions also give insight into the difficulties encountered as a result of the coexistence of Christians, Jews and Arabs, on prostitution, on the funerary practices, among other elements related to the universe of power and spirituality. This analysis is also based on the comparison of all these items with other texts of similar nature generated by other cities in Sardinia as well as the rest of the cultural area of Crown of Aragon.
