abstract:
This article delves deeper into the idea of 'servitude' in the works of Giordano Bruno, in relation to his doctrine of vicissitude and change. Bruno highlights how the nature of 'composite' things itself implies that each thing is subject to a vicissitude of dominion and servitude, of happiness and unhappiness. Bruno also writes about 'voluntary servitude', which he takes to be a defining characteristic of the person (the philosopher) who, through his personal search for the truth, makes himself an instrument of nature, and this is precisely why he is free.
