Abstract:
The author discusses coin finds from the Italian excavations at Gortyn (Crete) as evidence for the history and the economy of the island during first century B.C. to the Arab Conquest. Two different periods are focused: and more precisely the first decades of Roman rule, with special regard to the Gortyn area, and, more in detail, the Byzantine period: in the latter case, coins finds are discussed as documents of a monetary -even restricted- economy during the 'second dark age' of Crete.
