A Contribution to the Study of re-used Architectural Marbles in Troia Cathedral (Foggia Province, Southern Italy): Identification and Determination of Provenence

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2009
abstract:
This study looks at the white marble spolia present in Troia Cathedral, with the aim of identifying the constituent marbles and the quarries from which the stone was dug, using minero-petrographic and isotopic analyses. The presence of mostly Proconnesian and Parian marbles supports the notion that the source of these materials was substantial and homogenous, and probably remained the same during the different phases of the church's construction, from the Norman-Swabian to the Angevin period. This source could be a Roman monument of Aecae, the site on which the city of Troia was built.
