abstract:
Intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) is supposed to support the circulation by reducing the systolic arterial pressure and heart afterload during blood ejection and by increasing the coronary blood flow, cardiac output and myocardial oxygen supply, as a result of diastolic augmentation. This goal can be achieved by proper control of IABP; otherwise, the results of its application may be opposite to that expected. In some cases it is necessary also to apply artificial ventilation of the lungs when IABP is used. Thus, simultaneous application of IABP and the mechanical ventilatory support creates a new situation for the cardiovascular system, as intermittent positive airway pressure generated by the respirator affects hemodynamic parameters as well........................................
