The years spent by Miguel de Cervantes in the Habsburg army marked deeply his personal life and literary works. This essay deals with the famous writer's military experience, focusing on the role of patronage in his career and in long-term Mediterranean conflict for hegemony during sixteenth and seventeenth century.
