abstract:
Education and training in laboratory animal science is essential to ensure the correct use of
laboratory animals and the high quality of experimental results. Researchers in charge of planning
and carrying out experiments and their colleagues (junior researchers, graduate students, etc.)
should be well prepared in the biomedical sciences (biology, medicine, veterinary medicine,
pharmacology, etc.). They should also be trained in laboratory animal science and should have
knowledge of the ethical aspects of experimentation and the well-being of animals.
The aim of this course is to contribute toward disseminating information about Italian and European
laws on this topic and to train the users of laboratory animals with regard to the biology of the
species used as well as to laboratory techniques, zoonosis, major animal pathologies, etc. This is
even more important for those who use laboratory animals for research related to the improvement
of human health.
According to the FELASA "Recommendations", the course consists of 40 hours of theoretical and
practical training for individuals with university degrees in different scientific disciplines who are
part of research projects in which laboratory animals are used.
