abstract:
We have many literary information and a rich archaeological evidence on Centuripe during the Roman Republic, but very few architectural remains. On the contrary, numerous public and private Roman concrete masonry monuments of the imperial period are preserved. These and the Catania, Syracuse and Taormina ones constitute the only evidence of Roman building techniques in eastern Sicily, but in Centuripe do not find correspondence either in an equally rich archaeological evidence of other kind or in significant information inferable from literary sources.
In the last twenty years, however, excavations and specific studies have enriched our awareness of imperial age monuments of Centuripe. Furthermore, unpublished small digging investigations were conducted in various parts of the Roman city between the years 2010 and 2012. The results of these surveys and of other discoveries that occurred independently of the excavation activity are the subject of this contribution.
