Hyperspectral Imaging Based Platforms for Demolition Waste Characterization, Inspection and Quality Control: Hardware Configurations, Logics and Algorithms

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2012
abstract:
Demolition Waste (DW) represents a major portion of the total solid waste production in the world, creating severe ecological and environmental problems. Therefore there is the need to improve recycling strategies of such a waste. A correct preliminary identification of the material characteristics (composition, texture and structure) could strongly improve the entire DW recovery process. Furthermore, the possibility to perform a monitoring of the different DW flow streams could also increase the quality of the recycling process allowing, at the same time, a full certification of the DW derived products. In this study the use of HyperSpectral Imaging (HSI) technique in the NIR field, to characterize the different materials constituting the concrete to be recycled is described and evaluated. The adoption of HSI based sensors architectures could help to define the best demolition strategy to apply, and the in-situ materialshandling-strategy to follow, in order to generate "an optimal feed" for recycling. Examples of application to DW are described and discussed.
