Synthesis and characterization of new organic dye for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (dsscs) to improve light harvesting efficiency (LHE)

Abstract:
Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC) are one of promising technologies for solar cells application due to its advantages such as low cost and easy fabrication as compared to silicon based solar cells. Sensitizer dye plays a critical role in light harvesting and electron injection and thereby effect the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of DSSC. A conventional design for organic dyes is the DONOR-? bridge-ACCEPTOR (D-?-A) structure. An extra electron-withdrawing moiety (acceptor) can be integrated between the donor and the ?-bridge to extend the spectral response, enhance the dye stability and improve the photovoltaic response 1. A benzothiadiazole units was integrated between an electron-rich indoline scaffold and a dithienopyrrole molecule used as ?-bridge scaffold. At the end of reaction an acceptor-anchoring group (cyanoacrylic acid unit) was integrated. Furthermore, to broaden the light absorption profile and improving the performances of the devise, is it possible adding an organic molecule that absorbs and transfer the light energy to an acceptor molecule 2. We designing a new covalent ANTENNA-DYE system with a completely organic structure (figure 1) connecting the two units with an "azide-alkyne" cycloaddition. In this communication, we will report recent progress on the synthesis of new covalent construct, on spectroscopy characterization and optoelectronic proprieties.
