Abstract:
End-of-Life (EoL) products and material mixtures found in E-waste are highly variable and in continuous evolutions. However, recycling systems are extremely rigid and modification of material routing and pro-cess parameters to cope with evolving product and market conditions is not currently supported. This pa-per discusses the characteristics of a new generation of smart demanufacturing systems to support a more coherent matching between the fast dynamics of the end-of-life products' life-cycle and the system life-cycle. An example of a prototype Cyber-Physical System (CPS) solution, implemented at the demanufac-turing Pilot Plant at ITIA-CNR, is presented. The Installed CPS gathers in-line data about the processed mixture composition by using a Hyper-Spectral Imaging system (HSI) and adjusts the parameters of the downstream electrostatic separation process according to the specific mixture under treatment. The results pave the way to a next generation of highly adaptable demanufacturing systems.
