Integrazione di tecniche di rilievo e informatiche per lo studio e la messa appunto di un GIS archeologico per Sabratha

The detection of buried antiquities requires the collection and processing of a considerable amount of data, aerial photographs, satellite images, historical and contemporary maps as well as bibliographical information. A suitable organization of all these data can be achieved with the use of information technologies such as the Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This paper presents a GIS developed for the management of the data of the archaeological site of Sabratha (Libya). Due to the size of the site this initial study focused on some areas located within the zone known as the Roman Theater district. The first section of the paper introduces the use of GIS in archeology and discusses the state of the art in the field. In the other section the organization of the GIS and its main features are presented. The GIS has been developed for researchers, but it is sorted also for general purposes, like dissemination.
