abstract:
Al wires reinforced with Al2O3 nanoparticles were produced by a powder metallurgy process, which relied on ball milling consolidation by extrusion and cold rolling. This procedure revealed to be able of preparing composites with a reinforcement homogeneously dispersed in a ultrafine grained microstructure. The ball milling was responsible of the fragmentation of the oxide layer which covered the Al powder particles and of the fracture of the alumina nanoclus-ters added ex situ. The nanocomposites showed improved mechanical properties in terms of hardness and tensile resistance. They also showed excellent damping properties at the high temperatures.
