Giovan Battista Comencini (1849-1924), an architect of Udine origin, after having spent the first
years of his professional activity in Rome, arrived in Naples in 1884 following the Venetian Society for
enterprises and public buildings. Appreciated initially for the strong technical skills, since the first
realizations, while showing continuity with the local building production late nineteenth century, showed a
full openness towards the new tendencies of Art Nouveau that were becoming established throughout the
beautiful country. In 1901, already professionally mature, he realized the decorative project of the interior of
the house in Chiaia of the Count de Vito Piscicelli Taeggi. The decorative design of the house enriches the
register of the rich production of the architect who, for over thirty years, was very active in the Neapolitan
capital Comencini, considered by critics among the first to introduce the floral language in Naples, moved
towards the new horizons of decorative arts and became in fact the cultural reference of the artistic world
that was becoming established through the new ways proposed with the contribution of applied arts. Of the
works of the architect, ascribable to the flow of floral made before 1910 (period after which a different
figurative address is recorded in his production).The decorative design of the De Vito piscitelli Taeggi house
is a successful test of modernity. In light of the discovery of an original documentary iconographic repertoire
of the harmonious design of the aristocratic residence, is possible to appreciate the more minute decorative
details inspired by floral motifs made with an individual and refined imprint.
