abstract:
This contribution concerns the so-called peasant agriculture. Firstly, the draft of the Italian law on protection and enhancement of peasant agriculture and in particular the definition of "azienda agricola contadina" (peasant farming) and "agricoltore contadino" (peasant producer), is analyzed, highlighting, on the one side, the civil movements reasons in favor of the law and, on the other side, the international context in which they developed. Secondly, concerning the international context, the aspects of the UN Declaration on the rights of peasants and other people working in rural areas that could be implemented in the Italian system thanks to the introduction of the mentioned draft law are examined.
Indeed, the debate concerning peasant agriculture offers interesting insights into the role of non-industrialized and small-scale agriculture in pursuing objectives of global interest such as food security, climate change fight and, more generally, the challenges for the achievement of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Moreover it raises reflections about traditional subjects the of Italian agricultural law, such as the agricultural entrepreneur and the "coltivatore diretto" (i.e. farmer who works his land directly).
