abstract:
For many years Italy has faced an issue related to the abandonment of
agricultural land, particularly in less fertile areas. This phenomenon carries serious
economic, social, environmental and landscape consequences. The chapter firstly
examines the recent Regional and State legislation on the so-called 'land banks'
as a "new" instrument to recover abandoned and uncultivated lands, underlining
some critical aspects. Then, it focuses on the Regional regulations considering the
recovery of abandoned and uncultivated lands as an opportunity to pursue social
objectives, such as social inclusion of disadvantaged groups.
