The participation in the Communitarian Initiative Program "INTERREG ITALY - ALBANIA" promoted by the Apulia Region represents an interesting opportunity for cooperation with the Institute for Cultural Monuments of Albania in the field of Albanian historical and architectural heritage enhancement, also through the use of digital survey and virtual representation techniques for the documentation and design of restoration and conservation programs.
Within the general scope of the project - the enhancement of historical and architectural resources of Albania through the definition of 'art and religion' itineraries for the cultural, tourist and economic development of local territories - specific research activities focused on the exchange of experience in the perspective of a lively technology transfer between the project partners.
The case study, St. Nicolas Church - significant for its peculiarities - is situated in the surroundings of the village of Mesopotam, Saranda. The Church, dating back to the Byzantine period, is part of a monumental complex comprising the Monastery, surrounded by ancient walls and towers mostly in state of ruin or decay. The survey and digital restitution of the four façades of the Church were carried out in cooperation with Albanian technicians for on-site operations in digital survey activities, allowing the experimentation of distance tutoring.
