abstract:
The European Commission, particularly through the new CAP, intends to ensure economically, socially and environmentally sustainable agriculture and forestry by reserving a large part of resources for climate actions. In this context, the exceptional value of national natural capital provides fertile ground for exponential development of sectors and supply chains related to the bioeconomy, guided by careful socio-territorial analysis. CNR's Institute on Air Pollution (IIA), through its know-how, technologies and facilities, is able to enable the recovery of multiple types of agribusiness and agroforestry waste currently destined for disposal. Electrospinning technology allows the recovery of "second raw material" from various types of biological waste to be reintroduced into the production cycle. The process is able to realize a plethora of combinations of the residual components into nanostructured products, which are of particular interest for creating active coatings (e.g., slow release, antimicrobial properties, etc.) also for the protection of wooden artifacts or supply chain products. In addition, with the same technology, the use of the same wastes, in different mixtures, can be used for the development of smart multifunctional systems for sustainable and competitive agriculture, often without the use of toxic solvents and particularly energy-intensive processes.
