abstract:
The objective of this thesis work is to produce a detailed analysis on the ceramic foams, highlighting properties, production technology and possible aerospace applications. Using simplified mechanical models, such as that of Gibson and Ashby, it was possible to observe and quantify a major variation of the chemical properties, physical and mechanical properties as a function of the relative density of the ceramic material. It is also proposed an assessment concerning the choice of the technology of production of ceramic foams to be taken, as a function of precise characteristics required in the design step, such as resistance to relative compression and average pore size. The analysis of the properties of ceramic foams made it possible to outline their potential applications in industrial, biomedical and aerospace fields. For a description of possible space applications will be introduced recent studies related to porous UHTC (Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics. The porous UHTC associate with surprising refractoriness and resistance to thermal shock, typical of dense UHTC, the lightweight, making them very interesting materials in the aerospace industry
