Porous and cellular materials have long fascinated scientists and engineers. A great variety of cellular materials is present in nature. Their architectures as well as their unique properties have inspired researchers for the development of lightweight structures, energy-absorbing padding, or thermal insulating panels. Examples of cellular architectures in nature are wood, plant leaves and stems, trabecular bone, coral, cork, and sponges.
