The paper presents the record of a conversation-interview held by the authors with the physicist Carlo Rovelli in December 2014 on the themes of the conference 'Science, gender and society: where do we stand?' held in Trento on 12-14 November 2014. The topics include: recent trends in research policy at national and European level, research evaluation, the role and position of women in scientific careers, training and international mobility, in a mix that alternates analysis and feedback on policy with the personal experience of the great physicist.
