The spin-wavemodesinnanoscalepermalloystripesarestudiedusingBrillouinlightscatteringforthe
case whereanexternalmagneticfieldisappliedtransverselytothelengthofthestripes.Byadjusting
the magnitudeofthisexternalfield,theoverallmagnetizationmaybevariedbetweenthe
approximatelytransverseandlongitudinalorientations.Theobservedspin-wavefrequenciesare
analysed usingarecentlydevelopedmicroscopicdipole-exchangetheorythatisparticularly
appropriate whenthemagnetizationdisplaysstrongspatialinhomogeneity.Comparisonbetween
theoryandexperimentforthetwosizesofstripesstudiedgivesfairlygoodagreement,allowingthe
magneticparametersofpermalloytobededuced.Asmallmagneticanisotropyoftheeasy-planetypeis
shown toplayanimportantrole.
