abstract:
The study of both constructive and typological aspects and seismic damage represents the fundamental step to plan any
restoration or strengthening intervention aimed to recover the functionality, safety and preservation of buildings struck by an
earthquake.
In this context, the paper illustrates the activity which the research units composed by the Universities of Genoa and
Catania and the Construction Technologies Institute of L'Aquila (National Research Council - ITC) started from August in the
historical centre of Casentino (AQ). In particular a systematic data collection and field surveys have been carried out. These
data represent the starting point for the interpretation of the seismic damage which occurred and the design of the much

proper criteria to adopt as strengthening interventions. This preliminary phase, particularly addressed to the building
knowledge, allows to contextualize these criteria to the local constructive technique of the historical centre examined.
In particular, the proposed methodology may be summarized in three main phases: the primary survey, the interpretative
one and finally that addressed to the design of strengthening interventions.
Focusing the attention in particular to the first phase, the paper illustrates the adopted methodology and the tools
specifically arranged to optimize the collection data on the aggregate buildings.
