The history of collecting art, antiques and scientific age in the State of Milan Spanish and Austrian is examined in the essays in this volume in terms of the particular relationship with space: that is, the perspective of mutual determination between collections and the environment. It is a complex and changing relationship, marked by a slow passage from "chamber of wonders" to the concept of specialized museum. A special role is played by the representations of nature, zoology and botany give an ecumenical tone to the space and relativize the boundaries between traditional and new descriptive science.
