SOME EFFECTS OF ANAEROBIOSIS ON PROTEIN METABOLISM IN RICE ORYZA-SATIVA CULTIVAR ARBORIO ROOTS

Academic Article
Publication Date:
1981
abstract:
When 3 day aerobic rice seedlings were subjected to anaerobiosis, free amino-acid content in the roots increased and their relative concentration changed. In this tissue, the rate of protein synthesis, measured as (3H) amino-acid incorporation, decreased immediately after subjection to anaerobiosis and remained at low level for the subsequent 24 h of anaerobic treatment. Polypeptide patterns of proteins synthesized in air or under N analyzed by SDS [sodium dodecyl sulfate] polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorography were different and many polypeptides were characteristic of the anaerobic metabolism. The return to aerobic conditions produced a sharp increase in the rate of protein synthesis and the restoration of the aerobic polypeptide pattern.
