abstract:
In the institutional and economic context of 10th century-western Mediterranean, the Provincia of Sardinia disengages itself from the Byzantine Empire, through a slow and poorly documented process, and establishes its own state. Between the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th century, several territories break loose and, later, form other kingdoms, known as "Giudicati", which are attested in written sources from the second half of the 11th century. By revisiting different types of sources already well-known (archival, artistic and material), this paper illustrates the potential of applying a multidisciplinary approach for modelling the rise and formation of one of these kingdoms: the Kingdom of Càlari.
