Some open issues after twenty years of formal ontology

Twenty years ago, the first conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS 1998) made clear the state of the art and the problems that research on ontology needed to face to have an impact on applications. It is time to take stock and evaluate what remains to be done.
