Abstract:
This essay deals with plague in the Modern Age with particular attention to
the Kingdom of Naples in the 17th century. The plague was a very contagious
disease, which caused very high mortality rates. Lacking proper medical
remedies, a valid preventive "policy" was the only "medicine" against the
disease. So, isolation and quarantine, which were well known, but often not
timely adopted because of various reasons. The experience of the Kingdom
of Naples, struck by a serious epidemic in 1656, proves the importance of
prevention and the difficulty of completely isolating an area.
