Spherical pinch. Generalized scaling laws and experimental verification of the stability of imploding shock waves in spherical geometry

abstract:
The analysis reported in this paper derives scaling laws which are generalized in their parameters, in that they explicitly contain the radius Rp of the central plasma and the time delay ?t. These improved scaling laws lead immediately to the conclusion that, in breakeven experiments, negative time delays should be adopted, i.e., the imploding waves should be launched before the formation of the central plasma. This paper goes further in considering the SP as a fusion scheme and reports some preliminary experimental results on spherically convergent shock waves, visualized through a holographic technique. It is shown that the holographic results do not confirm the evidence of instabilities recently found (K. Takayama et al. 1987) but prove that in the spherical case, as in a previous cylindrical case (E. Panarella 1969), no detectable instabilities are present.
