On the choice of the basis in variational calculations of eigenvalues

We suggest a practical method for the optimal choice of parameters of a given set of basis functions used in variational calculations of eigenvalues. The method can be applied, in principle, to any quantal system and has been tested with excellent results in the case of the two lowest levels of anharmonic oscillators, including the double well problem.
