Abstract:
Trust is a key component of human relations, whether they be social, political or economic. In sociology much consideration has been given to this concept because it is very complex. Both in scientific and everyday language, the term 'trust' recalls various meanings as well as different objects. This causes major problems for researchers, especially when they want to study how much people trust someone or something by means of survey questions. In this article we explore the concept of trust, investigating the meanings of the ordinary language through cognitive interviews and linking them to those of the scientific language. The aim is to understand whether survey questions on trust convey unique meanings or they lead to distortions in the interpretation of results.
