La ricerca storica e l'immigrazione straniera negli anni dell'Italia repubblicana

This paper attempts to investigate foreign immigration in the republican period of Italian contemporary history, starting from historical studies. Foreign immigration is observed from 3 points of view: workers arrived in Italy and their integration in the labour market, issue discussed already from the late '60s; refugees and exiles arrived already at the end of the second world war; migration politics, understood as economic policies, international relations and social policies. The author researches the presence of this issues in historical studies, reviewing brief histories of Italian republican period, miscellaneous books, specific studies about regions and urban or rural areas. The focus is not only on historical studies but also on social sciences studies that adopted an historical perspective. The main target is to trace a long term history about foreign immigration in Italy in a point of view not limited in time to a recent period but extended to the whole period from 1945 to today. This paper attempts to investigate the migrations of people to Italy from an historical point of view, with the aim to approach its origins and features through the comparison of different periods, methodologies and available sources. The main target is to trace the historical trends of migration to Italy from the early1960s to the late 1970s, because during this time new, original and significant flows of foreign immigrants can be recognized in Italy. In this specific case, socio-economic impact and political debate will be highlighted to frame the spreading phenomenon of immigration into the broader picture of the Italian Republican history and its pivotal political, economic and social matters.
