Abstract:
In this paper, we aim to discuss the Phoenician hilltop settlement of Pani Loriga, which was established towards the end of the 7th century BC, and to consider its transformations in the course of the 5th century, when Carthage imposed her hegemony on Sardinia. While the Phoenician site is only partially known, in particular through some 140 incineration burials located on the western slopes of the hill, a substantial phase of domestic building activity has been identified on the hilltop and eastern slopes that may be dated between the end of the 6th and the early 5th century BC. ?roughout that century, rock-cut burial chambers were also dug into the western slopes and ritual activity took place in an area on the western fringes of the hilltop, where older standing stones document the long (pre)history of settlement on the hilltop. Pani Loriga seems to have lost its momentum around the mid-4th century BC, when major foci of human activity moved to the fertile surrounding valleys.
