Abstract:
Relations between the Phoenicians and the indigenous people of Sardinia: commercial strategies and territorial control between the 9th and 6th centuries BC. This contribution aims to better understand the dynamics of the relations established by the first Phoenician sailors with the indigenous peoples of Sardinia down to the arrival of Carthaginians on the Island, whose policy was characterized by conquest and direct management of territorial resources from its earliest stages. We therefore intend to examine the long historical period that unfolds between the end of the 9th century BC, when the Phoenician presence in Sardinia became more substantial, and the end of the 6th century BC, when Carthage through its shrewd military strategy took possession of the key areas of the Island. In this long period, indigenous peoples played a leading role in the predominantly peaceful relationships as they integrated with the Phoenician communities. Thanks to the acumen and foresight of scholars of the calibre of Sabatino Moscati and Ferruccio Barreca a special laboratory for examining these complex dynamics is the south-western part of the Island. The research they started over half a century ago continues to give extremely interesting and innovative results in the panorama of studies, which we intend to examine in detail to offer stimulating reflections in the context of the conference discussion. Other particularly interesting scenarios to analyse the relationship between Phoenicians and Nuragic people are the Sant'Imbenia emporium in the northwestern of the Island, and the Monte Prama (Cabras) sanctuary, which controlled the territory immediately behind of the future colony of Tharros.
