In the philosophy of Carlo Cattaneo a fundamental role is played by the ideas of variety, unity and relation, whose dialectical interplay is the engine for the historical progress of civilizations. The article analyzes the formation of these concepts in the first series of «Il Politecnico» (1839-1844), highlighting their characteristics and the function attributed to them in the mechanisms for producing science and human knowledge.
