abstract:
This article focuses on the medieval text Atile en prose, written around the half of the 13th century. This "romance" recounts in an epic and legendary manner the invasion of Northern Italy by Attila the Hun's troops at the half of the 5th century a. D. This study aims to offer a preliminary critical description, according to the so-called "Lachmann's method", of Atile's textual tradition, which consists of Franco-Italian, Latin and Venetian versions of the text. Moreover, this article suggests an innovative interpretation of Attila's character, which in this text may have been outlined as an allegorical figure for Ezzelino III da Romano, tyrant of the so-called Marca Trevigiana during the 13th century.
