abstract:
The application of the D. Leg. 155/2010 involves the development of Special Networks aimed to measure the concentration and chemical composition of atmospheric particulate matter. MATTM, ENEA and CNR-IIA are involved in the organization and set-up of these Networks. We report in this paper the criteria used to build the Networks and the results of the selection and optimization of the measurement methods. In particular, the artifacts of PAH monitoring were assessed through series of concentration measurements on suspended particulates conducted in real atmosphere and in reaction chamber. The study was applied to seven "carcinogenic PAHs" quoted in the European and Italian legislation as well as to two mutagenic congeners. Looking to volatility and reactivity vs. oxidants displayed by each PAH, the operating parameters of sampling must be strictly defined in order to apply suitable correction factors of concentrations and to compare data collected by different laboratories.
