Abstract:
The contribution examines the history of the Bouchard and Gravier bookshop in Rome, the main outlet for French books in the Papal city in the eighteenth century. As a result of the discovery of a large number of unpublished documents it is now possible to paint a more complete picture than has hitherto been possible of the lives and careers of the two owners, who came from the Alpine valleys of the Dauphiné, and to provide a more detailed account of the commercial activities of the bookshop, which was the Roman branch of an international network built up by the two booksellers.
