abstract:
Lead white often suffers degradation, in some cases it converts to a dark brownish lead dioxide (Pb02) in the form of plattnerite. A reconversion method was developed and has been used, but the causes and mechanisms of the initial conversion remain unknown. This study focuses on the influence of temperature, humidity and oxidising agents on the process. Alteration products were characterised by means of micro-Raman spectroscopy and colorimetric measurements, both of which are non-destructive. The aim of the project is to understand fully the mechanism and the reasons leading to the formation of plattnerite.
