Attachment and social behavior in children's autistic disorders

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2015
abstract:
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have difficulties in the development of social interaction which may be tied to the attachment relationship with their caregivers. The aim of the study is to explore the quality of relationship of attachments in 10 children with ASD and the differences in attachment classification (Ainsworth, Blehar, Waters, & Wall, 1978) with 10 typically developing children. Furthermore, the Akdemir, Pehlivantürk, Unal, and Ozusta (2009) form was used to investigate attachment-related social behavior between child and adult. Results suggest that, although children with ASD can develop secure attachment relationships with their caregivers, the quality of social relations during episodes of separation and reunification may be impaired.
