Urban and socio-economic renewal in Budapest

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2015
abstract:
Nowadays it is imperative introducing a sustainable approach in the socio-economic and urban renewal of cities. These processes in Eastern European cities, after 1989, led to migration flows and expansion of city into the surroundings. The paper illustrates the case of Budapest, in which regeneration, still ongoing, was at first related to physical restoration and then enlarged to social and environmental aspects. The commitment of the city, to face the modern challenge, began with a range of urban projects (Corvin-Szigony, Magdolna, etc) and is evident in the long-term development plan Budapest 2030, which pay attention to the social, ecological and economic issues, as to problems related to energy and climate change adaptation. It's aimed at reduce energy consumption and pollution, but also to re-organize and revitalize the city's economy, its infrastructure and daily life according with the identity of the places linked to the Danube.
