abstract:
This paper is a survey of theoretical work and results in modular computer design and indicates some fields of study which should be strongly developed in the near future. Modular design at logical level is discussed, including such concepts as logic primitives, universal logic modules, regular structures, cellular arrays, partition algebra, regular sequential machines and maintainability at logic level. A variety of machines - von Neumann, Unger, Holland, Solomon, STARAN, OMEN, PEPE, ILLIAC IV etc, are examined as arrays of computing elements.
