abstract:
Two experiments were undertaken to compare the nematicidal properties of aqueous extracts and freeze-dried tissues of Ruta graveolens and Senecio cineraria on the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. In an in vitro experiment, nematode egg hatch from egg masses was significantly reduced by both extracts, although mortality in R. graveolens extracts was significantly higher than the one in extracts of S. cineraria and similar to the one in a solution containing 5 microng/ml of the nematicide fenamiphos. In a pot experiment, soil infested by M. incognita was treated with 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0% w/w freeze-dried tissues from the two plant species and planted with tomato. Freeze-dried tissues of both species significantly suppressed nematode gall formation and number of eggs and juveniles on tomato roots even at the lowest rates, but were phytotoxic
