Chapter 2 - Environmental air pollution: near-source air pollution

Chapter
Publication Date:
2023
abstract:
This chapter is focused on atmospheric pollution nearby sources, thus emphasizing pollution in near-source (local and regional). The process is described by general equations that can be easily adapted to any location and which contain terms related to emissions, chemical transformations, and deposition. Dilution and removal of pollution is strongly affected by atmospheric turbulence that is simply described in qualitative aspects. The use of radon data for the interpretation of primary air pollution processes is also given. This approach results in a simple and immediate understanding of pollution data. Also, the same approach can be effectively used for secondary pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide. The paper also illustrates how to combine the Internet of Things with small-low cost sensors to gain detailed information on space and time distribution of pollutants.
