Modeling of Multilayered Optical Devices by TLMIE Method

Chapter
Publication Date:
2004
abstract:
Photonic polarizers based on stacked multilayer waveguides are widely used in optical integrated architectures like filters, photodetectors, lasers and MEMS. In this contribution we present an accurate and efficient analysts of stacked waveguide structures performed by means of the modeling of stacked waveguide structures. The EM analysis is performed by means of the accurate and efficient TLMIE method. The latter is a 3D full-wave hybrid technique which combines the advantages of the numerical TLM method in dense, finite regions and those of the integral equation method in homogeneous regions where analytical and/or numerical Green's functions are available. Theoretical results are compared to measured data, where possible, showing very good agreement. Starting from this validation we can provide design criteria for the optimization of the devices under investigation. The analyzed structures are: i) waveguide polarizer using an ARROW Structure(TE passing), ii)waveguide polarizer using a multilayer cladding (Tmy passing), iii) a sloped and a regular Laminated Polarizer Splitter (LPS).
